From a Raw DHIS2 Export to a District Health Report in One Click

Producing an annual district health report should be an exercise in interpretation. Too often, it becomes an exercise in copying, pasting, rebuilding charts and checking whether figures moved correctly from one file to another.

The data already exists in DHIS2. The difficult part is turning a large aggregate export into a coherent document: organising the indicators, creating the charts, writing the first analytic observations and keeping every section consistent with the official reporting format. In a busy district office, that work can consume days that should be spent understanding the results and acting on them.

I built the SW District Health Report Tool to shorten that journey.

What the tool does

The application takes raw aggregate data exported from DHIS2 and produces a formatted Microsoft Word report for a health district or a South West regional summary.

The workflow is deliberately simple:

1. Select the district.
2. Select the reporting year.
3. Choose English or French.
4. Click Generate.

The finished Word document opens automatically. It follows the structure of the official annual health report and includes more than 30 charts, tables and a section-by-section analytic narrative generated from the supplied data.

That first narrative is not intended to replace the judgement of the district team. It gives the team a strong, consistent starting point. Staff can spend their time validating unusual results, explaining the local context and deciding what the findings mean instead of drafting every paragraph from a blank page.

Built for the conditions where reports are produced

The tool is a compiled Windows desktop application and works fully offline. There is no server to configure, no account to create and no need to upload health data to an external service. The data remains on the user’s computer.

It produces reports in both English and French and runs on Windows 10 and 11. Those choices are practical: district teams need a tool that works on the computers and connections they already have, including when internet access is slow or unavailable.

Why automation matters

Automating a report is not only about speed. Repetitive manual work creates opportunities for inconsistent chart ranges, misplaced values and sections that no longer agree after a late correction. A repeatable generation process applies the same structure to every district and every reporting year.

That consistency makes comparison easier. It also frees reviewers to focus on the questions that matter:

• Which services improved or declined?
• Which health areas are being left behind?
• Is an unexpected result a real programme signal or a data-quality problem?
• What should the district prioritise in the next work plan?

The software prepares the report; the health team provides the interpretation, context and decisions.
